Central Baptist College picks up NCCAA Awards

Three Central Baptist College baseball players, Ben Madison (SO/Benton, AR), Jalin Lawson(SR/Troy, AL) and Cole Johnson (SR/Fordyce, AR), were selected for National Christian College Athletic Association awards this morning. Madison was chosen as a first team All-American, Lawson was selected to the second team and Johnson received Scholar Athlete recognition.

Lyon College had the Pitcher of the Year and Freshman Pitcher of the Year in Tyler Tognarine and Reese Chovanec, respectively; Ben Madison of Central Baptist College was named the Newcomer Pitcher of the Year.

Caulin Cragle Named AMC Pitcher of the Week

Cragle, a 5-1 senior from Houston, Texas, capped off the weekend sweep for the Mustangs over Park University by tossing a 3-hit shutout on Saturday afternoon. He held the Pirates in check all day, walking two and striking out six as Central Baptist went from being a half-game behind the Pirates for the final AMC Championship berth to holding a two-and-a-half game lead for that spot in a little less than 36 hours.

Ben Madison, Central Baptist College named NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week

Ben Madison, a sophomore from Benton, Arkansas, pitched a no-hitter in the 3-0 win over Martin Methodist. Madison had 16 strikeouts and just 2 walks in the shutout. He leads the team with a 3-0 record and innings pitched (17), and has a 1.59 ERA on the season.

Ben Madison named AMC Pitcher of the Week

Madison, a 6-3 sophomore right hander from Benton, Ark., helped the Mustangs get a win over the Martin Methodist College RedHawks by taking matters into his own hands and firing the second no-hitter in head coach Aaron Brister's tenure as the baseball coach in Conway. Madison faced only four over the minimum in the game, walking two, hitting a batter, and striking out 16 – the highest single-game strikeout total in the NAIA so far this season. So far in 2017, Madison is 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA.

Went 8-for-18 (.444) as the Mustangs split six games over the course of the week. He doubled twice, walked, stole four bases in four attempts, scored three times, and drove in four runs in the six games as well.

CBC's Lawson selected as 2017 NAIA Preseason Baseball All-American

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2017 NAIA Baseball Preseason All-America Team. The 17-member squad was chosen by the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association (NAIA-BCA) All-America Committee.

Central Baptist College's Joshua Buczek has been selected as the 2016 Hank Burbridge Unlimited Potential Outstanding Leadership Award recipient.  The award is the most prestigious given to a baseball player in the NCCAA.

The No. 1 seeded Missouri Baptist worked its way back into the championship game after falling to Central Baptist (Ark.), but they couldn't turn the tables against the hot offense of CBC as the Arkansas crew took home the AMC Tournament title.

Justin Southerland, a senior from Bigelow, Arkansas, appeared twice in a three-game series against Hannibal-LaGrange and won both games. In his appearances, Southerland allowed just 1 hit, 1 walk, and no runs, while striking out 5 batters.

CBC gets to 40 wins

Conway, Ark. – The Central Baptist College Mustangs became 40 game winners by defeating the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans in an uncommon triple-header 5-2, 7-6, 9-8.
The strange scheduling was due to the weather forecasts for the weekend, when the series was originally scheduled to play.  With this the last conference series for both squads, coaches agreed to do whatever necessary to get the games in and finish conference play.
The wins left CBC at 40-14 in regular season.  A record feat for both the College and Head Coach Dr. Aaron Brister.  "I turn forty next week, so I've been telling the guys let's get forty by forty." said Brister, "I just thank the Lord and my players for the effort, they played 28 innings today."

Jalin Lawson named NCCAA student-athlete of the week

Jalin Lawson, a junior from Troy, Alabama, led the Mustangs to an American Midwest Conference Sweep over Harris-Stowe State University and played well in a narrow loss to NCAA DII Harding University. Lawson batted .700 (7-of-10) with 2 doubles, 3 home runs, had a 1.80 slugging percentage, and was walked 6 times. Lawson scored 9 runs and had 6 RBI’s on the week. Lawson leads NAIA in home runs (19) and slugging percentage (.943).

Tyler Tognarine and Jalin Lawson pick up AMC Weekly Awards

Flashback to February 15: Tyler Tognarine had thrown his first no-hitter and Jalin Lawson was hitting .450 after mashing a pair of doubles and home runs. The Arkansas duo were named American Midwest Conference (AMC) Baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week and here we are again as Tognarine and Lawson have stepped and taken care of business for a second time.
Tognarine and the Lyon College Scots had a big weekend as they were set to host #9 Missouri Baptist at home in the AMC Game of the Week. The Scots came out on top in the first two games as the Spartans unleashed their anger in game three.
Tognarine played a role in both of the first two games off the mound. He made an appearance in the top of the ninth to shut down the Spartans and secure the 9-7 win to start the series, earning his first save of the season.
The next day in game two, the Cape Coral, Fla., native took the mound and threw a complete game two-hitter while allowing only one run. The sophomore struck out eight and handed out five walks en route to earning his seventh win of the year 2-1.
Tognarine posted a 1.13 ERA on the week after throwing eight innings with the lone earned run. That brings his season ERA down to 3.13. Opponents are also only hitting a measly .208 off the right-hander. Tognarine also sits 16th in the NAIA with his seven wins and 15th for his 72 total innings pitched.
This is Tognarine's third AMC Pitcher of the Week award for 2016.
Lawson has been having himself quite a week as well. The Mustang second baseman went 7-for-10 (.700) and slugged 1.800 on the week.
Central Baptist (Ark.) started off their week with a 7-6 loss to NCAA Division II Harding University. In that game, Lawson went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two RBIs, three runs scored and a walk.
CBC would recoup and set their focus on AMC-opponent Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) for the weekend series. The Mustangs came out strong and swept the Hornets in three games 11-1, 9-0 and 10-0.
Lawson was only kept off base in one plate appeareance all weekend as he went 5-for-6 with five walks, four RBIs, two doubles, six runs scored and one home run against HSSU.
On the week, the Trol, Ala., native scored nine runs on two doubles and three home runs. He also drive in six and had six walks. Lawson currently leads the NAIA with his 19 home runs and .943 slugging percentage. He is third in the country for his 55 RBIs and ninth with his 1.35 runs scored per game.
Lawson's dominance hasn't slowed down yet, earning him his second AMC Player of the Week award for 2016.

Austin Kuchinski named NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week

Freshman Austin Kuchinski has become one of CBC's starting catchers in his first season of play. The native of Powder Springs, Georgia helped CBC to a 5-0 record as he batted .615 with 8 hits and 5 runs scored. Kuchinski had 5 walks, 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 13 RBI’s, and a slugging percentage of 1.385. On the season, Kuchinski currently has a batting average of .368, an on base percentage of .446, and a slugging percentage of .603.

Austin Kuchinski named AMC Player of the Week

Meanwhile, Kuchinski and his Mustangs are trying to take the AMC by storm in their first year.

After starting off AMC play with three losses to FHU, CBC has come back to win five of their last six AMC games.

Kuchinski played the biggest role in the Mustang's sweep of Williams Baptist College this weekend.

Before the AMC series though, CBC took home a 15-5 win against Crowley's Ridge College which included three walks by Kuchinski, one run scored and a single that drove in a run.
He carried that momentum into the weekend as he went 7-12 (.583) against WBC. The catcher unloaded three home runs and drove in 13 runs alongside a pair of doubles and five walks.

The freshman also recorded multi-hit games in each appearance, drawing his season batting average up to .353 and his slugging percentage to .603.

With his 13 RBIs, Kuchinski doubled his season total and earned his first AMC Player of the Week award for 2016.
