Three from UAPB named First Team All SWAC


Andre Davis, Blake Estep and Kevin Walsh all earned first team all-conference honors.

Davis, a 6-6, 225 senior infielder/pitcher from Castro Valley, Calif., earned first team all-conference honors this season as a first baseman.   Davis saw action in 38 games as he finished the season with 51 hits in 140 at-bats for a .364 batting average, while scoring 34 runs and driving in 39 on the season.    He recorded 19 hits for extra bases in 12 doubles, one triple and six homers.

On the mound, he finished the season with a 2.28 ERA in 27.2 innings pitched for a 2-2 record and five saves.  Also on the season, he struck 35 batters and allowed just 19 hits and seven earned runs.  Davis struck out a season high five batters against Louisiana Tech (2-20-15).

Estep, a 6-3, 175 junior pitcher from Choctaw, Okla., earned all-conference honors as a starting pitcher.  This past season, he made 16 appearances on the mound, while starting in 12 of them.  He finished the season with a 6-3 record and a 5.09 ERA, allowing 86 hits, 40 earned runs and striking out 52.

Rounding out the cast of first teamers is Walsh, a 6-3, 220 senior relief pitcher from Magnolia, Ark.   He finished the season with a 4-2 record and a 1.70 ERA.  In 23 appearances on the mound, Walsh gave up 29 hits, eight earned runs and struck out 54 batters on the season.   He struck out a season high six batters against Prairie View A&M (3-7-15) and struck out five against Ole Miss. (3-18-15) and Southern University (4-19-15).

UAPB wins SWAC Western Division


UAPB (23-16, 16-6 SWAC) has captured their second consecutive Western Division Championship and adding to the history with the Golden Lions baseball program by winning back to back division titles, finishing over 500 and over 20 plus wins.  The Golden Lions will finish the 2015 as solo champions, even though TSU closes out the series, by winning two games to one over Prairie View Sunday, which will still keep Golden Lions ahead by a game over TSU.

UAPB wins SWAC West with sweep of Texas Southern



The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Baseball Team won the Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division Title with a pair of wins over Texas Southern, here Saturday afternoon at MacGregor Park.
Since rejoining the SWAC in 1998 this is the first time in school history, that UAPB has won the conference western division.

SWAC Baseball Awards



The University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Head Coach Carlos James was tagged Coach of the Year after leading UAPB to 21-30 record including a 13-11 mark in conference play. The Golden Lions finished home play at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex with a 12-9 record. The Golden Lions pitching staff combined for an earned run average of 4.20 which ranks first in the conference. Three were named to a conference leading SWAC Pitchers of the Week this year.

Carlos James Named UAPB Head Baseball Coach


The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Department of Athletics has announced the hiring of Carlos James to the position of head baseball coach.
James arrives to UAPB after spending the previous two seasons at the University of Arkansas-Monticello where he served in the same capacity. The Pine Bluff native took over the struggling UAM Baseball team and turned them into a legitimate conference contender during his two years at the helm of program.

Michael Bumpers out at UAPB

Bumpers was let go following a disappointing 2010 season in which the Lions went 9-16 in the SWAC. Athletic Director Skip Perkins said the won-loss record wasn't the sole factor, and that fund raising was also an issue.

UAPB player killed in car accident

Kevin Edwards, 19, a University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball player, was killed in a vehicle accident Sunday on Interstate 57 at Calumet Park, Ill., according to a report in the Chicago Sun-Times. According to an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper, Edwards, a sophomore from Matteson, Ill., was driving a 2004 Nissan south on Interstate 57 when he attempted to change lanes and crashed. The Nissan spun out, hit a guardrail on the left side of the interstate then rolled in the right lane, partially ejecting Edwards, according to the Sun-Times.

Hunter Complex a step closer


Hunter donated $500,000 for the estimated $9-million complex which will house UAPB’s baseball team.

The first phase including playing fields, scoreboards and dugouts could be completed by Spring 2010.

Trio of Elks commit to play college baseball


Elkins' Steven Whitney, Drew Clark and Buddy Diaville, fresh off a Class 3A state championship in May, took part in a signing ceremony with fellow American Legion teammates watching on. Whitney and Diaville will play for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and Clark will attend the University of the Ozarks.

$1.34 million generated for Pine Bluff Ballpark

PINE BLUFF, Ark., (AP) — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff has raised $1.34 million so far in the first phase of its effort to build a $9 million baseball complex.

The donations include $500,000 from Pine Bluff native and Los Angeles Angels outfield Torii Hunter.

The complex will be named for Hunter.

Construction on the first phase includes a baseball field that's to be ready in time for the spring baseball season.

The overall project includes an indoor training facility, a baseball field and stadium and a softball field that can also be used for Little League baseball tournaments.
