Gulf South Players of the Week

WEST DIVISION

Southern Arkansas left fielder John Long (SR, L/R, 5-9, 175, Smackover, Ark.) and Henderson State pitcher Chris Brown (JR, R/R, 5-10, 150, Little Rock, Ark.) are the Gulf South Conference Baseball West Division Player and Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 13.

Long collects his second honor of the season while earning the Muleriders' second straight and sixth award of the year. The Smackover, Ark. native set the tone for SAU's ninth three-game series sweep of the 2008 campaign with a monster opener against visiting Christian Brothers. The senior was a perfect 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles and homeruns while driving in five and tying a school record with six runs scored in the 18-7 victory. The Muleriders used two more hits and three more RBI from Long over the next two contests as they wrapped up their 28th win in the last 29 games.

Brown notched his second award of the season following a masterful, complete-game shutout of Harding, leading the Reddies to their first Conference win of the season. The junior from Little Rock, Ark. scattered seven hits over nine frames of work while walking just one and fanning seven. Brown retired the final 11 batters he faced, recording his second shutout of the season and guiding HSU to its first GSC sweep since 2006.
