Gulf South Players of the Week

WEST DIVISION

Ouachita Baptist first baseman Will Gowdy (JR, L/R, 6-4, 210, Amarillo, Texas) and Southern Arkansas pitcher Hayden Simpson (SO, R/R, 6-0, 170, Magnolia, Ark.) are the Gulf South Conference Baseball West Division Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the period ending March 1.

Gowdy lays claim to his first career GSC West Player of the Week award following a great week at the plate. The Amarillo, Texas native hit .692 with four RBI and five doubles. Gowdy, a junior, plated eight runs while slugging a massive 1.308.

Simpson earns his third career GSC West Pitcher of the Week honor and second this season after tossing the first no-hitter in the Conference since 2006. Ironically, two hurlers threw no-hitters in 2006 and they both wore Mulerider uniforms. Simpson, a sophomore, was a strike away from a perfect game after walking the leadoff batter on a 3-2 count against Culver-Stockton (Mo.) this past Saturday. The hometown product from Magnolia settled down and retired the next 20 batters, fanning 13 of the minimum 21 he faced. The 13 strikeouts matched the second-best in school history, just behind the record-setting 15 he reached three weeks prior.
