SAU's Hayden Simpson wins GSC weekly award

Delta State shortstop Devin Goodwin (SR, R/R, 6-0, 185, Russellville, Ala.) and Southern Arkansas starting pitcher Hayden Simpson (SO, R/R, 6-0, 170, Magnolia, Ark.) are the Gulf South Conference Baseball West Division Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the period ending March 15.

Simpson shook off the first loss of his career last week with another complete-game masterpiece in Southern Arkansas' GSC-opening run-rule win at Harding this past Saturday, 10-0. The hometown hurler from Magnolia faced just three batters over the minimum in giving up just two hits and a walk over eight innings of work. The sophomore whiffed 11 hitters, his third game this season in double-digit strikeouts, while retiring the first 15 batters he faced. Bisons catcher Ryan Moody's bunt single in the sixth broke up Simpson's bid at a second no-hitter this year, but the right-hander still managed to strike out the side in two different innings. The honor is Simpson's fourth of his career and third in five weeks this season.
