Gulf South Weekly Awards

WEST DIVISION

Southern Arkansas shortstop Andrew Whittington (JR, L/R, 6-2, 205, Texas City, Texas) and Henderson State pitcher Chris Brown (SR, R/R, 5-10, 150, Little Rock, Ark.) are the Gulf South Conference Baseball West Division Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the period ending April 5.

Whittington caps off a career week with his first-ever Player of the Week accolade. The shortstop from Texas City, Texas had multi-hit games in four contests last week, going 10-for-15 with seven runs and 16 RBI. The junior was four-for-four with two, bases-loaded triples and eight RBI against Division I foe Grambling Wednesday and was a combined six-for-11 against Arkansas Tech this past weekend. Whittington totaled 11 bases against the Wonder Boys while driving in eight more runs with two doubles and a home run.

Brown nabs his third career award and came up big when the Reddies needed him the most, pitching into extra innings as Henderson State knocked off visiting Delta State for the first time in eight games this past Saturday, 3-2. The victory was only the fifth in 57 games against the Statesmen, and after the scheduled seven-inning affair went nine innings, Brown was still standing, throwing just 98 pitches with six strikeouts and retiring 13 of the last 14 batters of the game. The senior from Little Rock, Ark. improves to 8-1, the best all-time record in a single season by a Reddie hurler.
