SAU's Schroeder, OBU's Gowdy Accomplish Rare GSC Baseball Feats

Southern Arkansas third baseman James Schroeder (SR, R/R, 6-0, 205, Montgomery, Texas) and Ouachita Baptist pitcher Will Gowdy (JR, R/L, 6-4, 210, Amarillo, Texas) are the Gulf South Conference Baseball West Division Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the period ending April 12.

Schroeder becomes the fifth player to claim both Player and Pitcher of the Week honors in the same season. The Montgomery, Texas native led the Mulerider slugfest last week which pounded out 71 hits and 74 runs in four games and only 31 total innings. The senior third baseman recorded three multi-hit and multi-RBI games while slugging three home runs and plating eight runs. Schroeder went eight-for-eight with a double, 11 RBI, six runs, three walks and two home runs, including a grand slam in Friday's doubleheader at Christian Brothers. SAU swept the twin bill by a combined 48-8 before routing the Bucs Saturday, 17-4.

Gowdy follows in Schroeder's footsteps and is the sixth player in league history to claim both a Player and Pitcher of the Week award in the same season, also becoming the sixth person all-time to earn both accolades. The Amarillo, Texas native tossed a complete-game in Friday's night cap against visiting Arkansas Tech, leading the Tigers to a 12-2 victory. The junior southpaw allowed just two hits, two walks and two unearned runs in seven innings of work while striking out nine Wonder Boys.
