2011 GSC Pre-Season Baseball Release

Gulf South Conference baseball fans should have an eye on four teams entering the 2011 season.

The league’s head coaches and national media each focused their attention towards the same quartet of squads as the season approaches. For the first time ever, defending Conference Champion Valdosta State was tabbed as the Overall GSC Pre-Season Favorite, outgaining division-rival West Florida by one vote. VSU’s selection also marks the first time since 2008 that the overall favorite was not also picked to win its division, as UWF was chosen to win the East Division. Not to be overlooked are perennial West Division powers Southern Arkansas (2011 Division Favorite) and Delta State which also received multiple overall nods.

The four squads also gained attention in the Pre-Season national rankings. Valdosta State was ranked No. 14 in the College Baseball Newspaper Top 40 and No. 38 in the College Baseball Lineup Top 30. Southern Arkansas earned the No. 10 spot in the Top 30 and a No. 16 ranking in the Top 40. West Florida enters the year slotted at No. 21 in both polls, while Delta State is No. 20 in the Top 30 and No. 32 in the Top 40.
