Arkansas Native Deffenbaugh Reflects On Baseball Career

In 1938, Lula and Eugene Deffenbaugh traveled from Cedarville to Van Buren every Saturday with their son, Edwin Cliff Deffenbaugh.

Years later, Ed Deffenbaugh became a legendary high school baseball coach in Texas.

They're the same person.

"In Texas, I was always known as ‘Ed,' but around family I'm ‘Cliff,'" Deffenbaugh, 80, said. "I was named for one of my uncles, Cliff Deffenbaugh."

A baseball coach in Texas for 41 years, including 35 as a head coach, Deffenbaugh was inducted into the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Jan. 14. He coached at four high schools - Houston St. Pius X, Crockett, Marshall and Channelview - from 1959-2001.
