McCann named to Bench Award Watch List


FAYETTEVILLE - Arkansas junior catcher James McCann is one of 42 catchers named to the watch list for the 2011 Coleman Company - Johnny Bench Award, as announced on Thursday afternoon.

A native of Santa Barbara, Calif., McCann is hitting .297 with six RBI and five runs scored in 10 starts this season. McCann has also added a stolen base and been struck out just twice in 37 at bats.

A 2011 preseason All-American, McCann hit .286 during the 2010 season in 59 games played, including 58 starts. McCann hit nine homers and drove in 34 runs. He also was the primary handler for a Razorback pitching staff that posted a 3.93 ERA, its lowest since the 2006 season. Defensively, he threw out 12 potential base stealers.

McCann has played in 118 games in his collegiate career, with 103 starts, and has a .272 career batting average with 10 homers and 51 RBI.

Considered one of the best defensive catchers in college baseball, McCann has yet to commit an error on the season and has thrown out three would-be base stealers. For his career, McCann has committed just five errors and has a .995 fielding percentage.

The list of 42 catchers will be narrowed down to the semifinalists on March 19 and the finalists will be announced on June 6. The winner of the Coleman Company - Johnny Bench Award will be announced on June 30.
