Renovations to UAM baseball, softball fields underway

No longer standing at Weevils Field are the dugouts, backstop or concrete around them, all of which were torn down or broken up and removed by heavy machinery. That’s the start of the first phase of UAM’s renovations to its baseball and softball facilities, which will continue through the summer and into the fall.

The renovations are funded by UAM’s “Swing for the Fences” capital campaign, which aimed to raise $300,000. About $175,000 has been donated so far, enough to replace the dugouts, backstop and concrete at the baseball field and address some “cosmetic issues” at the softball field as well, UAM Athletic Director Chris Ratcliff said.

The rest of the project entails installing new grandstand bleachers and suspension netting at both fields and building new press boxes, all of which Ratcliff hopes to begin come late summer or early fall. The dimensions of the field will also be expanded during the renovation, making the field more similar to most college fields at NCAA Division II schools.
