SAU Captures 2009 GSC Baseball Championship

Southern Arkansas turned in a perfect performance in the 2009 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship Tournament, posting a 5-0 record en route to its second league baseball Crown.

No. 2 West seed SAU further validated its No. 1 ranking in the nation and in the region, blowing through the Tournament field, capped by a 5-0 shutout of No. 3 East seed Valdosta State.

Southern Arkansas' pitching staff shined bright during the Tournament, allowing just 11 runs on 24 hits in 42 total innings. Leading the way was starting pitcher Hayden Simpson who led the way on the All-Tournament Team as the Most Outstanding Player. Joining Simpson were teammates center fielder Gavan McCauley, third baseman Cannon Lester, starting pitcher Matt Speake and designated hitter/pitcher James Schroeder.
